I vividly remember being invited over to a friend's house for dinner one night while I was in graduate school. I was working toward earning my doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering, as was my friend. Time itself was already scarce and if you weren't working on your research, you were wasting your time. And so when my friend showed me the small but prolifically producing vegetable garden, I could only think to myself, "cool... but why would I want to do this when I could just go buy it at the grocery store?".
It wasn't until I finished my PhD, got married, and moved several growing zones north to Selkirk, NY that I first started dabbling with growing food. My first fascination? Growing salad greens hydroponically in our basement! I was hooked. Fresh salad from my basement whenever I wanted? No more soggy lettuce quickly losing life in the back of my fridge? Yes, please.
Once my husband and I became homeowners, we built a raised bed garden and have slowly expanded our garden space each year. Once I started savoring the harvests of my labor, I finally understood why people grow food at home. You won't find such tasty and nutrient dense fresh vegetable on the store shelves!
Thinking back to graduate school, I chuckle at my naive thoughts. Now I am on a mission to help others have success in the garden so they too can have the satisfaction of savoring from their own soil.
